Step 1: DEMO'd the closet!
Step 2: Pulled off ALL baseboards
Step 3: Took very accurate measurements
Step 4: Drew out the plan and broke up the closet into "cabinets" (in this case I think we had 13!)
Step 5: Created a base of 2 by 4's that all the cabinets would sit on. Secured that to studs.
I wanted this closet to have the upscale feel, so I created "Cabinets" that included a back of cabinet grade plywood. I purchased SANDE 3/4" PLYWOOD from Home Depot. It runs about 37.00 a sheet. The entire project "probably" used about 15 sheets, and ran around 600.00 total with paint, etc.

AND THEN…
I have a table saw now, but at the time, I had the poor guy at Home Depot make all my LONG cuts, and I used my miter saw to do the rest at home.
I managed to tackle this about 2/3 "cabinets" at a time, and it took about 3 weeks working at night and on the weekends.
I assembled each individual cabinet (basically you are just making boxes!) with a 2" brad nailer and cabinetry drive screws.
Once assembled we installed them into studs and the 2" by 4" base with 3.5" drive screws.
My shelves are NOT adjustable. I was pretty set in knowing exactly where I wanted them to house our individual clothing needs, shoes, etc.
I secured each shelf with drive screws and brad nails before installing them to the wall.
Once all the "cabinets" were in place, I used 1 3/4" drive screws to connect each of the cabinets to each other.

MY ONE CHEAT: I purchased TWO pine dressers (TARVA) from IKEA and after assembly, did not include the feet. I secured them to the 2" by 4" base and to studs.
To continue that high end look, I trimmed all the front edges in MDF and added base trim to match!
I then sanded and caulked the entire closet system.
I purchased my hardware from Amazon which was the most expensive part of the closet! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D4CDVFW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I can't even explain what a game changer this closet has been. (There is a mirror where the hole is now.) It's been MONTHS and it stays SO organized and clean. My husband has space for his cherished shoe collection, and most importantly our clothes and shoes aren't damaged, EVERYTHING has a spot. It's such a success that I built out my kids closets too!
